Vickers Hospitalized With Clots; To Miss Dover

vickers1 Vickers Hospitalized With Clots; To Miss DoverBrian Vickers, driver of Red Bull Racing’s No. 83 Toyota, has been hospitalized with an undisclosed medical condition. He is currently undergoing testing and further evaluation.

Via an unverified Twitter account, JJ Yeley tweeted that he heard that Vickers’ undisclosed condition was a blood clot.

Jeff Gluck later confirmed, via Twitter, that RBR GM Jay Frye said that Vickers was experiencing chest discomfort, and testing revealed blood clots in his veins. There were no blood clots in his arteries.  The clots are currently being dissolved and Vickers has received a clean bill of health. That said, no timetable has been given for Vickers return.

Back in 2008, a local affiliate of ABC News covered an Australian study that found, “Drinking just one can of the popular energy drink Red Bull may put you at risk of developing blood clots.” The test included 30 people who were tested before and after consuming Red Bull.

The researchers found that “one hour after they consumed the drink, their cardiovascular systems were no longer normal, and their blood became sticky, an indicator of blood clots.”

It should be noted that there was a small number of study subjects in this particular study, and the source of funding for the study and who conducted the study was not disclosed.

The Independent, and the U.K.’s  Times also covered the story.

While Red Bull has not been connected to Vickers’ clots, this story is sure to cause speculation.

Casey Mears will replace Vickers in the No. 83 in this weekend’s Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway.

Vickers said in a press release:

It is unfortunate that I will not be able to participate in the Dover race. [Mears] is a good friend of mine, and I know he will do his best for the No. 83 team this weekend.

Frye said:

Our main concern right now is with Brian and his health and recovery. All things are looking good at the moment; this is just a minor setback. We appreciate Casey filling in this weekend and know he will represent the team well.

Mears was slated to drive Tommy Baldwin Racing’s No. 36 this weekend. With him filling in for Vickers, Johnny Sauter is expected to take over driving duties for Mears.
