NASCAR driver and car owner Robby Gordon has been penalized 50 driver points and 50 owner points for an unapproved rear axle housing.
Kirk Almquist, crew chief for the No. 7 Robby Gordon Motorsports Toyota, has been fined $50,000 and placed on probation until the end of the calendar year.
The car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4I (any determination by NASCAR Officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-10.6H (rear axle housing exceeded the maximum specified toe of plus or minus one degree) in this year’s Sprint Cup rule book.
The penalty doesn’t affect Gordon’s position in the standings, as he was holding a 152-point advantage over Scott Speed, but it does cut nearly a third of the points from the gap.
He also maintains his 34th position in owner points, but his advantage over 35th-place’s John Andretti is cut from 140 to 90 points.
